We've been busy!

 We have been busy in class!!  These are some of the reading strategies we have been working on in class.  It is my goal  to get them to think about their thinking to make them more aware of what they are thinking about when they read.

I love this picture of my class reading to their buddies!  We have flashlight Friday every Friday so we can read with our flashlights.  This past Friday, we didn't have our buddy time as previously scheduled, so we invited them to come during our flashlight Friday.  They all had a great time!

The following two pictures of our class during our science lab activity.  The students had to figure out what solution would get oil out of a feather.  This was after showing them the damage oil spills have to the environment.  They had a great time using the scientific method!!

I wanted to end with a picture of how generous our PTO and PIC Parents are!  We were all given these cool bags with first aid gear.  I can't tell you how loved we are at this school!  I appreciate these parents so much!!

Reading, Reading, & more Reading!

These are reading strategies we have been working on in class.
Eagle Eye: Reminds us to look at the picture for clues to solve the word.
Lips the Fish: Reminds us to make sure how lips are in the correct placement to make the sound of the word.
Chunky Monkey: Reminds us to chunk words into small chunks to sound them out and solve the word mystery.
Stretchy Snake: Reminds us to say the word slowly and stretch the word out. Then blend the sounds back together to make the new word.
Trying Lion: Reminds us to go back to the beginning of the sentence and try the word again.
Flippy Dolphin: Reminds us to flip the vowel sound if the first one doesn't work.

These are the writing strategies we have been working on:
Caps the Cub: Reminds us to start each sentence with a capital letter.
Stinker the Skunk: Reminds us to leave spaces after each word.
Dottie the Ladybug: Reminds us to use punctuation at the end of sentences.

 

Making up for Lost Time...

First up, our field trip to Casa Manana to see Repunzul!  It was wonderful and funny!  The kids really enjoyed it and I think the parents did as well!  We compared different versions of the story that we knew from reading books and watching the movie.  We guessed how this play would compare, but I don't think anyone guessed how this play correctly!!

 

 

 

With the help of a parent, I finally have my reading strategies posters ready to hang up as we go over them!!  I am so excited to finally have it DONE!!

 

These are just a few that I have introduced so far.  I love them and how they teach students the different ways to figure out words when reading.  I know they like them too and having the animal clue really helps them to understand what they are doing when reading.

 

 I also found these strategies for writing.  I have the animals for them too, I just need to remember to bring them up to the school. 

 

I have been working really hard with my little friends on their writing.  I thought this was cute and tried it with my friends.  It has been working for the most part.  I think it is simple enough to help remind them what they need to be looking for when writing.

  

This is by far my favorite way to teach counting by 10's or 5's to 100.  I love that the kids can move around while learning and have fun- isn't that how it should be??
