Week 5

We had another great week of learning in class!

This week, in math, we learned about making patterns. We used dobbers, pattern puzzles, and movement cards to create our own patterns.

I also checked out iPods from the library for the first time. The class loved them! I believe I have signed up to have them one week every month :)

For Grandparent's Day we worked with our grandparents and made a frame and drew a picture to put inside it. They turned out so cute!

Week 3

We have had an amazing week this week!!  It has been our first official introduction to academics, although we are still working on procedures and expectations.  We visited the science lab on Monday and learned all about scientists, science safety, were able to try on goggles, and started our germ experiment.  We touched a slice of bread, one slice before washing our hands and one slice after washing our hand and then we also have a slice we didn't touch at all.  They are all in individual baggies and we have them on our white board and look at them daily to see what happens.

We also introduced our writing and handwriting journal this week.  I was very impressed with how much they were able to do and did in their writing journal!!  Handwriting is a slow process, but an effective one.  We will keep working on it in class and overtime we will see vast improvement!

We also introduced our math journals and explored with sorting this week.  The picture below shows some of the materials that we sorted this week.  I had them sort them in a group, they had to tell me how they sorted them, and then I had them sort them in a different way.  We are using the vocabulary: attribute, same, different, and alike.  Sorting is an important step in getting the students to think mathematically before formally introducing number sense.

On Friday we had an amazing visit with author, storyteller, singer Tom McDermott!  The kids loved him- he was so entertaining!!  Thank you, Mrs. Patterson, for inviting him to our school!!
